Socialbrowse | What is Social Browsing?
1 comments , first shared by Zack Garbow in Startups, Social Media,

Social browsing is a loosely defined phrase that means many things to different people. Because of the confusion about what social browsing is, people have strongly differing opinions about its relevance. Some think that social browsing is nothing new, others believe it will be the next big thing, while still others believe that social browsing is a market doomed to fail.

To make predictions about the success of the social browsing market, you must first be able to accurately define it. To be considered social browsing, a product must contain at minimum the following prerequisites:

1) Portable
The product must ...

Either Fox News Had Their Twitter Account Hacked, Or Bill O...
2 comments , first shared by Andrew Girdwood in Social Media,
My guess is this has nothing to do with the phishing attacks that started on Twitter a couple of days ago. But a few minutes ago the official Fox News Twitter account posted "Breaking: Bill O Riley is gay" (referring to the host of the popular Fox show O'Reilly Factor), right after a legitimate message about making turkey lettuce wraps. My guess is they're just finding out about it now, and realizing their password, which was probably "password," has been changed. Twitter will promptly restore the account to its rightful owners, I'm sure. But here's my ...

Put The Social Web In Context With Glue's New Browser Plugi...
0 comments , first shared by ErikNYC in Social Media,

Do you like to know what sort of music, movies, books, and other things your friends like? If so, you have a couple of options for following your friends' interests on the web today. You can either join a social network dedicated to sharing this information (think Goodreads, Flixster, Last.fm) or you can follow your friends on lifestreaming service like FriendFeed where you might happen upon a shared interest somewhere in their stream of updates. A third option would be to only see your friends' interests in context when you were actively viewing a book, movie, album, etc. on ...

2009: Products I Can't Live Without
0 comments , first shared by Zack Garbow in TechNews,
At the beginning of each year I traditionally publish a list of my favorite startups and products. This is the fourth year I've done this - previous lists: 2006, 2007, 2008. You guys get to pick the winners of the Crunchies - this list is all mine. This is a list of the products I tend to use daily. Some are for work (Wordpress, Delicious, Zoho, etc.), some are for fun (MySpace Music, Hulu, etc), and some are useful for both (Digg, Skype, YouTube, etc.). But I use most of them every day, or nearly every day, and I would not ...

If it seems like technology and cartoon humor don't fit as well together as crusty old millionaires and big-boob gold-diggers, it's probably true. The principles that drive tech innovation are based on a certain amount of hopeful enthusiasm that is...

Geo-Engineer Planet-Cooler Using Oceans : CleanTechnica

Bailing out the entire human race might turn out to be cheaper than bailing out Wall Street:

Spray gigatons of seawater into the air, mainly in the Northern Hemisphere, and let Mother Nature do the rest, suggests inventor Ron Acer in a patent petition for “a colossal refrigeration system with a 100,000-fold performance multiplier.”

“The Earth has a giant air-conditioning problem,” he said. “I’m proposing to put a thermostat on the planet.”

He estimates that his design would cost only a few billion dollars to implement on a global scale. (Much less than $700 billion)

Following The Twitter Hack Trail To DigitalGangster
0 comments , first shared by lizmoney in Social Media,
One thing that didn't make a lot of sense about the 33 celebrity Twitter accounts hacked this morning - the messages left on the various accounts weren't consistent and were clearly written by different people with different agendas. Fox News got “Breaking: Bill O Riley is gay," and Rick Sanchez from CNN got "I am high on crack right now might not be coming into work today." But other Twitter accounts had links to sites to generate affiliate revenue. Facebook's Twitter account had a message pointing to getlaid.info (now shut down), which redirected to a porn site ...

Happy New Year Facebook - your employees think you're lying...
0 comments , first shared by Andrew Girdwood in Social Media,
A gremlin inside Facebook - or more likely a disgruntled employee - briefly hacked Facebook in the last few hours. They went in to the Facebook advertising page and changed the title description from “Advertising” to “Lying”. How do I know? An observant informant emailed me the screen grab before the page was changed. Nice [...]

Amazon's Best-Selling Album Download of 2008 Was Available ...
0 comments , first shared by GAP in Business, Music,

nin_ghosts_logo_jan09.pngIn March 2008, Trent Reznor's Nine Inch Nails released the first part of Ghosts I-IV via BitTorrent, and released all four albums under the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike license. Even though fans could easily get free versions of the album, Ghosts actually went on to become the best-selling album of 2008 on Amazon's MP3 store.

Radiohead's In Rainbows, another high-profile album which was available for free for a limited time in late 2007, ended the year just outside of Amazon's Top 10 for 2008.

Sometimes modern design and minimalism go a little too far and it’s hard to figure out exactly what the products are.  We’ve tracked down 19 products that look quite cool but leave you wondering wtf? Yes, the American people have learned from experience that it's not the content of your resume but the quality of your character that will make you a good president.  And with the war in Iraq, the mortgage crisis, the banks going bankrupt, China winning the Olympics, and Gossip Girl on TV, we really need a personality cult more than we need policy. Get our your life insurance, your gun, and your credit card, because we're in for a rocky future.
